Where to start?!
Posted by Timothy on September 17, 2021 at 10:40 pmHey Joe – I’m planning to run plank in all the rooms noted below. Somewhere in the ballpark of 1800 sq ft. Which way do you think the planks should run, and where do you think I should start? You can see the stairs at the bottom of the pic. I’m thinking about running the planks so they will run parallel with the stairs. That way you’re looking down the planks when you walk up the stairs. The L hallways are throwing me off though. I have no idea where to start here, considering the huge amount of space I have to cover. I’m using Lifeproof Rigid core Dusk Cherry LVP. 8.7’x7 x 47.6′ planks. Do you have any thoughts?

I should note, that the stairs actually look all the way down the wall way. I am just off a bit in the pic.

Thanks for the reply! I’ve attached an updated picture. There were a couple of closets that I left off. To answer your questions. Yes, I was thinking about running the planks the direction you suggest. The dead space in the upper left was an issue with how I drew out the floorplan. I think the wall between the family room and that bedroom is shared. The planks are 8.7 inch wide and 47.6 inches long. I had another post that I think failed. There are a number of dips throughout the floor that are in the 1/8 to 3/16 range. Would you fill those in? I dropped a few planks together over them, and they didn’t seem to click or compress. There is also a larger dip right at the beginning of that left hallway that I’ll need to address. It’s somewhere around a quarter of an inch. Finally, how do you finish the floor up to the staircase? (we are working on the 2nd floor of the house) We are having the stairs carpeted. I will come back with pictures of the planks shortly! Thanks for the help, and God Bless!

Ok, here’s another response. Attached is a picture of the plank, and a picture of the document I used to define tongue and groove. Would I start in the hallway and snap a chalk line then?

Ok, third response to your answer here. I want to make sure to get these questions down while I’m thinking of them. How do I handle the stairs? There is a team coming to do carpet on the stairs next week. How do I finish the flooring at the top of the stairs?

Can you share a pic of the top of the stairs so I can better help you?

Hey Joe. The stair nose for my type of LVP is currently out of stock. I was hoping to have it in hand, so I could install it as I’m working past the stairs. Can you tell me where to cut the planks to relative to the stairs, so I can keep on going? Should I just cut them to he end of this nose, and trim them back with the oscillating saw later? Thanks!

Hey Joe – I snapped the line in the hallway. Then I measured 20 boards into the master bedroom and drew a dot. After that I measured the distance from the bedroom wall to the dot, that was 103.5 inches. I proceeded to measure 103.5 inches from the bedroom wall in a couple other spots, so I could snap a line. The dots didn’t line up though. The wall must not be square. Is this a problem? How do I choose where to snap that line? Will this impact the boards that I place later in the hall?
Thank you, and God bless you and your family!

Hey Joe! I’m planning to skip over the laundry room for now. I don’t really want to end up with a transition there, but I really need to scoot past it and get our playroom done. With that said, the laundry room is linoleum. It looks like there is luan under the linoleum. Do I need to cut the linoleum and luan back a bit to set the transition up? There was previously carpet in the hall.
