Thinset left after tile removal
My full project involves removing roughly 300 sq ft of 12″ tile. As per your suggestion, I removed one row of it so I can lay tile in two different rooms and connect them via a row of LVT that will go between the rooms. All I had was a consumer-grade rotary hammer w/a 4″ chisel bit, along with a floor scraper. I plan to rent some big stuff for the big job.
I removed the tiles and the thinset. You can see what that looks like in this movie:
There’s a lot of loose debris, but you can see that I’ve chiseled away most of the thinset, and it left behind an uneven layer of thinset stuck to the concrete floor. I’d say it’s like 1/16″ if that. We worked REALLY HARD using water to soften it, and another several hours w/the hammer chisel to get it to this point:
This was REALLY HARD and it was one row. It would kill me if I had to do this level of work on the whole 300 sq ft.
1. Did I too much prep? Would it have been fine w/ the residue layer, even though it was inconcistent?
2. If you say I did not do too much prep, then I see two options:
A. Rent bigger/better tools to do the floor prep of the rest of the area to get it to look like the second video. Not sure what tools I should be renting, though.
I was thinking this:

Mounted on this:
To do the initial tile and thinset removal. Then this:

Mounted under this to do the cleaning/prepping:

B. Get things down to that layer, then apply a layer of thinset over everything to make it all consistent. Not sure I have the skills to do that consistently over 300 sq ft. 😉
