MK LVP project
Posted by Mark on September 25, 2023 at 1:44 pmHey Joe,
So attached is my drawing, and here are some questions. The Family room, Living Room, entrance and Front closet will all be getting new LVP. The Kitchen, Bathroom, Pantry all have tile. The office I will be putting Hardwood in that was removed from the Family room.
I was thinking the best place to start would be along the back wall of the Family room, But how would I go about making sure I do not end up with a small piece at the front doorway?
I would guess that it is best to run perpendicular to how the floor joists run as well.
The Family room has 2 layers of sub floor, 3/4″ advantec, then 1/2″ plywood. I will need to add another 1/2″ of plywood to have the plank match the height of the kitchen tile. Should I glue, screw and staple that layer? (Guessing should staple thru top 2 layers and finish in bottom layer (1-1/2″ staple)
I still need to remove carpet from living room, and then will determine how much sub floor to add for that area and thru to the entrance and front closet.
Any other questions I need to answer for you?
Thanks for a great site to help with the learning process for this project and all your additional help.

Wall between family room and living room

Hallway transition, will need to build up once carpet is removed to match the height of the finish tile

Front entrance way, There was tile that was removed. I plan on removing plywood that is there due to layers of tile cement making things not smooth. Will then add to match transition into office where Hardwood will go.
-
Office transition back into kitchen area and tile height.

Hardwood being used in office area. Standard 3/4″ hardwood tongue and groove nailed.

Room pictures. The section on the drawing was supposed to represent the stairs going to the 2nd floor.

Last one showing how the hard wood transition to the tile was. I left this piece in place until I get ready to start laying the new floor to protect the tile edge for now. I have transition pieces on order for all the tile transitions and the transition into the office hardwood once that is completed.

Joe,
Here are some additional pics of the Hardwood

I forgot to ask, When I removed the Hardwood, and paper that was underneath, There were staples left from the paper. Should I try and remove those, or do you think I will be all set after adding the additional 1/2″ subfloor?

Joe,
Going after the plywood for under the LVP. Should I stay away from Big Box store (Lowes, Home Depot). I have a local place that I usually get my trim from as it definitely is better quality. I need to add 1/2″ in one room, and 1″ in the other. Was thinking I will have to go with 3/4″ and then add a layer of 1/4″. Local place is recommending what they call AC Pine (Arauco), Compared to Some of the Big Box stores, it is only a few dollars more when comparing sheet pricing. Thoughts? Should I look at Tongue and Groove or just straight edges?
Thanks for all you help

Hey Mark! I use good Quality OSB with a tongue and groove when using 3/4 inch. Then install 1/4 Birch or some sort of Hardwood. The 1/2 inch I also use OSB without a tongue and groove. I have seen too much failure with Plywood over the past 20 years and because of that I use OSB. It is actually much better than plywood.

You can use plywood if you are comfortable with that instead. I am just telling what I would use. Yes, osb is acceptable under vinyl plank.

Joe,
Looking thru your tools and supplies, you have quiet Walk LV. The Mannington has a pad on the underside, would you still add this as well?

Good morning Joe,
I am getting ready to finish laying down the subfloor in prep. I have 1 room that needs 1/2″ and the other needs 1/4″. My question is, should I glue/screw and staple them?
Thanks
-
The 1/2 inch I would, but only staple the 1/4 inch. The 1/2 inch seems like overkill, but it’s not. You don’t want squeaks, ever.

Joe,
So I am laying down the final 1/4″ subfloor in the Living room are. When I checked for how close I am to the existing tile hallway (Outside the bathroom) I see I will end up with about .125 of a difference in floor height. I was wondering what would be best to decrease this difference? Or do you think that is not enough to worry about as there will be a transition piece there? One thought was to add a row of tar paper to the underside of the 1/4″. Just not sure how far out I would need the additional material to not see a wave in the flooring. I will also be adding the Quietwalk LV that we spoke about earlier.
Thanks

You could stop the pad at the door and that would take care of the difference. Otherwise, you will need to float that out a couple of feet. Have you seen that video in the floor prep section?

Joe,
Attached is an updated drawing actual room dimensions. I am working on trying to figure where the best place to start will be. My thoughts are if I start in the Family room and move toward the entrance, I will end up having a small strip at the door (about 2″), now I know I can move the starting strip some because of the 7-1/2″ wall separating the 2 rooms. If I start at the entrance and move toward the family room, I would still have the same small piece. If I start with a plank that I remove 1″ off to start, then that finishing plank would be larger, and it will most likely be hidden by furniture as well. This should also keep a full width plank within the 7-1/2″ wall separating as well. My only struggle with starting at the entrance and moving toward the family room is the difference in measurements in the living room (3/8″ difference between the outside and inside wall measurements. The family room is measuring square with 136-3/8″ thru out the whole room. My thinking would be to snap a line some where in the middle of the living room that is square with the family room. Then measure back from there to start with a starter row. Then fill in the missing plank at the entrance trimming to fit. That would minimize what would be seen if anything as the front wall to the living room has baseboard heater along it.
I hope all this sounds correct. I have most of my floor prep complete, 1 small area that has a slight dip to feather, then I should be ready to start laying plank.
Thanks again for all our help with my project.
I hope you and your family had a Happy Thanksgiving.
