Coming into the final stretch of my hallway project and I have two questions:

    1. What length of 18 gauge brad nails should I use to nail quarter round into baseboard and t-molding/end cap into the subfloor?

    2. I have one stretch of flooring that is about 8 feet in length that has a 1/2″ gap from the baseboard, where the rest of the flooring is 3/8″ away (recommended by manufacturer). Should I rip out that section and fix it to 3/8″ gap or will the quarter round cover it and don’t worry about it?

Thanks for the reply Joe…as a follow-up question:

What is the recommended width to cover an expansion gap of 3/8″? Seems to me if I use 1/2″ shoe mold that the 1/8″ that I have to play with will not be enough if the floor contracts in the cold months or am I overthinking this?

My guess is that I need to maintain at least a minimum of a 1/4″ of overlap with whatever molding I choose to use.

Not trying to be difficuly, but let’s assume I have a perfectly uniform 3/8″ gap all the way around the baseboards in my hallway could I use 3/4″ x 1/2″ shoe molding like the link I posted below?

I guess bottom line is a 1/2″ molding enough to cover a 3/8″ gap given that there will be expansion and contraction? would you use a 1/2″ molding to cover 3/8″ gap in a job you would do for someone?
