Hey Joe – Just Getting Started
Hello Joe,
I’m nearing the point of installing LPV in my basement finishing project. I’ve decided on the product and will be ordering after hearing from you. Attached is the drawing. I’d like no transitions between the three “areas” if possible. Here are my initial questions to get going….
Floor Prep – concrete
The concrete floor was done in two pours, and there’s some leveling I need to do where the floor slabs join. Across the joint, one side is approx 3/8″ higher on the left end, sloping to level at the right end. The span is 18 feet wide. Would you suggest a self-leveling solution? Which Product(s)? Do you have instructional videos of the floor leveling process?
Installation Blueprint
Attached is the floor plan. The “red” numbers on the floorplan indicate the more accurate measurements after finishing the drywall and mounting the doors and door trim (over the software generated measurements).
Base Cabinets
I have approximately 11+ feet of base cabinetry and counter with a bar sink. Is it best to install the cabinets first or the flooring?
Other Thoughts/Questions
Only plan to finish the closet (with bi-fold door) and area under the stairs (where refrigerator will go) the other doors (#1, 2, 5 and 6) on the drawing are to unfinished areas. What would you suggest as a transition where the LVP will end, just inside these doorways?
Looking forward to getting that this last big part of my project. And I don’t know what I don’t know – that’s where YOU come in!

Thank you for your fast response – impressive! You’re a man of your word with integrity, you and your company are an answer to prayer.
I don’t have an answer to the tongue/grove direction question. I plan to purchase Lifeproof Golden Larch Oak (Model# HLVSPC024-C; SKU# 1006-465-235) perhaps you’re familiar with the product from Home Depot.
The updated diagram with labels has hash marks on the spaces that will not have LVP. The center square room on the diagram is a finished bathroom with porcelain tile floors. There will be a transition from LVP to tile there.
There’s an egress window in the “Main Rec Room”. There’s a door next to the egress window that covers the electrical panel. The refrigerator will go under the main staircase in the Main Rec Room. The “Workout Room” has a short set of stairs up to a storage crawlspace.
I plan to LVP both staircases (the main to the first floor and the 2nd to the crawlspace).
I had planned to run the LVP East/West with North being the top of the diagram as you outlined. Whichever direction creates the best-looking rooms is my ultimate choice.
I will explore the NXT Level Plus product locally. There are also pictures of the floor joint with a measuring tape showing the variance. At the opposite end of the joint, there is not variance, as the joint is level. The length of the joint is 18 feet.
There’s also a photo of the base of the main staircase.
I tried to make the names of the photos somewhat descriptive.

Hello Joe,
Thank you for the info on the expansion joint prep and the installation blueprint. I ordered the Lifeproof LVP and it is supposed to be delivered Monday. This give me a few days to figure out the expansion joint and review the videos you outlined.
Our basement was built with the vapor barrier under the concrete floor so I didn’t plan to install anything on top of the concrete.
I spent about 35-40 minutes on the phone with Laticrete support. They suggested a different approach and product for the expansion joint. Basically a foam backer with one of their flexible waterproof “caulk” products and then one of their leveling products to build up the low side of the joint (something thicker and workable with a trowel and not self-leveling). They said we needed to maintain the joint and that the other products would negatively react chemically with the joint stuff and not work the best.
Once I get through those conversation notes and review the links they sent, I get started on that. Will certainly update you on how it goes so that you can review and add it to your knowledge base – if it helps.
In the “workout room” in the nook, is a sauna. I will move the sauna, install the flooring, and move the sauna back….so I will be installing the flooring all the way to the wall back there.
One last question before jumping in (I think)…Is the screw or glue down anchors to stop the floor from moving?
I had the impression that the floor would float and have 1/4″ around the perimeter for expansion. If you recommend screw or glue, cool, I just trying to understand the other information about the floor/expansion characteristics.
