First floor project.
Good morning Joe. It has taken a little while to get back to my project. I hope you and your family have been doing well. My wife loves the way the whole second floor turned out. She absolutely loves not having the carpets upstairs.
The first floor should be much easier than the the second floor project I did last fall. I only really see four areas that I have questions on, and in essence it really only boils down to two. In the attached floor plan you will see three rooms in blue. These are the rooms I will be putting the Mannington Adura Max vinyl plank into. It is the same exact plank I used upstairs. All the remaining rooms downstairs have ceramic tile and will remain that way.
The first three areas are where the vinyl plank comes up against the ceramic tiles. There is one in the living room, one in the dining room, and one in the family room. There will be transitions at those three spots, but the tile is approximately 4/5 of inch to the sub-floor, and approximately 1/2 inch the the new plank when I lay it down by the tile. The other area of concern is at the fireplace in the family room. It also is ceramic tile. The numbers are almost the same.
The existing sub-floor is pretty level about the same as I had on the second floor. My question is should I put something down to raise the new planks closer to the height of the tile? I’m just not sure how noticeable that height difference will be in sight and feel when walking from room to room. The other issue is how do I bring the planks up to the fireplace? I don’t believe we use a transition. Would I use an end cap, and if so would it be helpful there to bring the plank up closer to the height of the tile? Obviously since it is the same room whatever I live with between the dinette area and the family room will also be the height between the family room and fireplace.
If you recommend bringing the height up, what should I lay down and how should I attach it? I seen a 5mm board but that does not raise the floor very much. I could use 3/8 plywood, that would get me pretty close even. I have seen some people say the new covering should be screwed down through the sub-floor to the floor joists. Other forums seem to say never screw in the floor joists, only to the sub-floor below.
