Blueprint Request
Posted by ele.espinosa on June 14, 2022 at 10:57 amHi. My name is Ele (pronounced L-E) or just El. I want to know the best place to start. I considered the dining area, shown on my sketch. I was going to allow the first plank against the outer wall to be around 4″. I dry fitted a few rows, going towards the front door.
That first row being 4″ would allow me to avoid thin strips as I reached that 45 deg wall shown in the drawing. However, I don’t know how that would pan out when I got to the area in front of the stairs going up.I could really use your expert opinion. Hopefully you can work with the drawing that I am attaching. Looking forward to your feedback.

Hi, Joe. Thank you for the feedback. I’m attaching some pics. I renamed the pics to match the perspective shown. I’m also attaching an updated floor-plan. I’ll address your questions.
-Where it shows “stairs down:, there is a step down to the basement stairs. “Stairs up” are stairs to the 2nd fl. They are right above the basement stairs.
-Past the garage door is a powder room. It is not included in the upgrade. I will be installing this floor right up to it.
-I drew a door where it shows the pantry closet. I may or may not go into it.
-I sketched the area where the stove is. I plan on installing flooring into the area where the stove sits. I will also go into the area under the fridge.
-If you notice, the upper area of the dining area towards the kitchen is slightly shorter (9’6″) than in the lower area of the dining area right wall to the kitchen wall (9’9″).
I think my concern is where that angled wall is towards the front door. Also, that area in front of the stairs leading to the 2nd fl. I do have a coat rack there, so that should be able to hide shortcomings.
Also, if I do start in the dining area, when I clear that 3’11” wall, should I continue towards the kitchen, or should I head towards the front door? Looking forward to your feedback. Please let me know if I forgot to address or show anything.
Regards,
Ele

Good morning, Joe. Did you get a chance to review my recent questions? Specifically, the one about identifying the tongue and groove. I’d like to start my project today. Thank you.

Hi, Joe. I hope your day is coming along well. I just watched your video. Thank you so much. It is very informative. I’m about to watch it a 2nd time. I have 2 questions…for now. 1st, which edge is the tongue and which is the groove? It was more obvious back when I used the stiff laminate flooring. With this LVP, I see it more as a top and a bottom. As an example, I’ll place a plank with the top facing the room. I will take a plank with the bottom facing the plank already on the floor and tilt it up, slide it under the top, and push. Does this make sense? Does that make the “top” the tongue?
2nd, at the edges when there is a step down (basement stairs & at the 6″ drop to the living room), do I cut the plank flush to the edge? I don’t have trim pieces for those, yet. This manufacturer doesn’t seem to make such trim, so I’ll probably have to use something generic. Thanks again.

Thanks, Joe. After my last message, I had a “duh” moment when I remembered to just check the little booklet that came with the planks. It showed the tongue and groove just as you stated. I made decent progress, following a few of your tips. I also lucked out in that as I worked towards, the center, from the dining area, the next row fell perfectly with the walls leading to the front.
Not only that, but I was able to end that row with a full plank, right at the door. As an added bonus, I used a 24″ piece to start the next coarse. That allowed me to end with a full plank at the other end. Right at the step down to the living room. Calling it a night. Thanks, again.

Hi, Joe. It has been a few months. I’m finally done with the floor. Just need to do the baseboards and the stair nose.
You mentioned being able to suggest some options for nose trims. I’d like some options that don’t include any cutting back of the flooring, if possible. What do you have for me? Thanks. 😊
